About this book
The Young Mother, or Management of Children in Regard to Health, is by Wm. A. Alcott and carries the year 1836. The advertisement to the third edition says the present edition has been much enlarged and that the author has added a section on the conduct and management of the mother herself. The contents list chapters headed, among others, The Nursery, Temperature, Society, Employments, Education of the Senses and Abuses.
The chapter on the education of the senses has sections headed Hearing, Seeing, Tasting and Smelling, and Feeling. The text says the digestive powers of the young are more nearly as strong as those of the adult than is usually admitted, and that they are much more active. The text remarks, "No wonder so many girls, of the present day, make miserable housewives."
