Better Babies and Their Care is a book by Anna Steese Richardson. A chapter headed Artificial Feeding calls successful artificial feeding of infants one of the big problems which the medical profession strives unceasingly to solve. The text says the medical profession has never found a perfect substitute for mother's milk, but has greatly reduced the rate of infant mortality, due to artificial feeding, by working out formulas. The text describes a mother who kept the milk in a tin pail, hung in the cool water of an old well, where the milk absorbed germs and the doctor traced the baby's death from acute bowel trouble to these germs. The text lists utensils needed for the ordinary modifying of milk, among them a strong measuring glass, holding sixteen ounces, and a two-quart pitcher with a wide neck.
The text says thumb-sucking thrusts the teeth out, and in some cases gives the entire lower part of the face the shape of a rabbit's.
