About this book
The Youngest Princess, or Little Means to Big Ends, is by Jennie Chappell, author of Berne's Bargain and Little Radiance. It begins on a snowy evening at Briar Cottage, where Minnie, Maud and Margerie talk by the fire.
In the sampled talk the girls tease one another, Minnie about her mirror and Maud about her books, and wonder about their father's youngest brother, who ran away from home, and about a grandmother Maud calls dreadfully strict and peculiar. In another passage the grandmother, newly found, agrees to have Margerie stay with her and uses the old-fashioned word 'biddable', which the girls find very funny. In a third, a lad named Ned, Margerie's protege, has not appeared, and the family at Briar Cottage is puzzled.
