About this book

The preface says that the writer wrote this little chicken book in the past few months and that the story is finished on the writer's eleventh birthday. The preface says that most of the chickens written about are members of the writer's own family, so the writer knows them well. The first chapter, "A Talk in the Chickenyard," has young Scratchfoot asking why everyone is talking on a hot summer day, the very time one ought to go to sleep.

Red Nose Mike asks what kind of a cravat Mr. Hog would be most likely to choose, and the answer given is "a pig's tie." A chapter headed "Death of Scratchfoot" has a hen, Brownie, telling Mr. Mike that Scratchfoot has fallen. The text says that eight years have now passed, that all is as usual at Fowl Farm, and that Lady Gray is dead.
