About this book
God's goodness, human freedom and the origin of evil form the central problem of these philosophical essays by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. The book begins with a discussion of the agreement between faith and reason, then develops its argument in three parts. Its appendices include a summary in formal arguments and reflections on Hobbes's account of freedom, necessity and chance.
The numbered discussion brings rival explanations into close contact. Leibniz considers Bayle's objections to Descartes's account of divine will. A prince who knows that two enemies may fight becomes a test case for the difference between permitting an action and wanting it. Leibniz revises the example to distinguish a ruler's limited power from the powers attributed to God. Readers interested in free will or religious philosophy will find an extended argument whose distinctions are worked through concrete examples and responses to other thinkers.
