About this book

H. G. Wells approaches religion through a distinction between the mystery of the universe and a God experienced within human life. Published in 1917, this work sets out his personal beliefs and argues against established Christian creeds, particularly the doctrine of the Trinity. Its opening treats disagreements over the meaning of God as a source of theological confusion, then separates questions about creation from the practical concerns of faith.

Later, Wells considers the moral commitments of atheists and agnostics, responding to McCabe's account of human cooperation and happiness. He argues that devotion to a power beyond oneself gives ethical action a lasting source of strength. Readers interested in religious debate can follow a writer pressing his own definition of belief through direct criticism, comparisons and reflections on conscience.
