About this book

Family history provides the starting point for Theodore Roosevelt's account of his own life, first published in 1913. He traces his father's Dutch ancestry through generations born on Manhattan Island and recalls the relatives, nursery songs and family stories that shaped his childhood. A boy's unruly ride on a pig through a departing church congregation gives these early pages an unexpectedly comic touch.

The personal recollections sit alongside arguments about public duty and the practical work of government. In his account of serving as New York governor, Roosevelt describes a canal investigation, dealings with Senator Platt and efforts to secure effective administration amid party pressures. He repeatedly weighs political ideals against the need to get useful work done. Readers interested in American political history can follow both his remembered family world and the reasoning he offers for his choices in office.
