About this book
As a boy near Boston, John Quincy Adams watches conflict with his mother and carries news between the city and the family farm. John T. Morse begins his biography with these early encounters with public affairs, then includes a letter in which the young Adams asks his father for help balancing study and play. A voyage to Paris with his father brings diplomacy into his childhood experience.
Morse follows Adams through diplomatic service, the presidency and the House of Representatives. His portrait links strong principles and independence with a severe manner that brought personal unpopularity. Accusations involving Adams and Clay spread through political repetition, showing how public suspicion can persist. The biography offers readers of American history a study of character alongside the struggles of government. Its attention to reputation, political loyalty and standards of conduct makes those struggles part of the account of a public life.
