Emma Hamm’s fantasy book “These Bitter Blooms” is engrossing. Following Alistair’s family’s bullying and insults of Thea, he attempts to make apologies by using his Raven Familiar to send her an apologetic message. The two start writing to each other covertly and become close friends that eventually turn into adolescent love. This interesting story interweaves fae, spirits, witches, and true love in a world where magic equals power.
