About this book

This Country of Ours is by Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall. Part I is Stories of Explorers and Pioneers, with twelve chapters that begin with the Vikings and Columbus and go on to the English flag, the French in Florida and Sir Walter Raleigh. Part II is Stories of Virginia, which starts with the adventures of Captain John Smith.

In one passage the ships of Columbus reach an island covered with fine trees. Columbus lands in a scarlet cloak holding the Royal Standard of Spain, kneels and kisses the ground, and the captains of the Pinta and the Nina follow with white banners. Another passage tells of La Salle, a fort called Heart-break, and a letter from Tonty saying that nearly all the men had mutinied.
