About this book

Harry Collins begins his day in a single room in Chicagee, a city of thirty-eight million people. Housing rules, crowded elevators and long commutes turn ordinary routines into sources of pressure. Even with a good income and his own car, Harry struggles with headaches and the feeling of being hemmed in. Robert Bloch's 1958 science fiction novel imagines population growth through the small inconveniences and physical strain of everyday urban life.

Harry later searches for the Naturalists, hoping to find organized opposition to the Leffingwell Law. Overcrowding is connected with loneliness, weakened friendships and public opinion shaped by broadcasting. His search raises the problem of how isolated people can act together when daily routines consume their time and attention. Readers interested in social science fiction will find a future built from housing restrictions, transport systems and managed public messages, with personal distress revealing the costs of organizing society around enormous crowds.
