About this book

An offer to gamble with twenty-seven million credits draws Jason dinAlt into a bargain with a visitor whose speed with a weapon unsettles him. On Cassylia, Kerk Pyrrus asks the professional gambler to turn that bankroll into three billion credits before morning. The money comes from mining on Pyrrus, and the conversation combines business terms with a threat. Harry Harrison's 1960 science fiction novel begins with the pressure of an enormous wager in a world of robot banking and travel between planets.

On Pyrrus, Jason's problem becomes one of survival and understanding. The jungle encounter in the middle excerpt shows him seeking contact with another human community, hoping to learn how its members live safely amid the planet's dangers. Their use of an animal to carry him hints at a relationship with local life that he wants to investigate. The appeal lies in watching a risk-taking outsider try to understand both a hostile environment and the people who inhabit it.
