About this book

Those Barren Leaves is Aldous Huxley's third novel, published in 1925, a sparkling satire set among a party of English intellectuals gathered at a grand Italian villa. Their hostess, the wealthy and self-deluding Mrs Aldwinkle, has surrounded herself with poets, scholars, and would-be lovers in the hope of reliving a golden past, and Huxley lets their conversations and small betrayals reveal the emptiness beneath their cultivated talk. Against the beauty of the Italian landscape he sets the vanity and restlessness of people who have everything except a reason to live. Witty and faintly melancholy, it is Huxley at his most characteristic.

Keratitis punctata cost Aldous Huxley most of his sight for two or three years from 1911 and ended any thought of medicine, so he read English at Oxford instead and turned to satire.
