About this book
Evelyn Gladys wrote Thoughts of a Fool, published in Chicago and London in 1905. A piece headed Democracy begins with a man who knew what a palladium was, and goes on to the tradition that the constitution is the palladium of our liberties, with each man a sovereign and no aristocracy.
Other passages take up other subjects. One compares the loss of a garter with the loss of a soul, saying that one's neighbors are busy trying to save the soul before it is even lost. A passage on education, in quotation marks, says that an educated dog turns somersaults and an educated elephant can waltz, and goes on to the educated man. Another passage mentions a man seen in his automobile with a death grip on his wallet, and says the essay is not written to convince the wise.
