About this book
John Morley is the author of On Compromise, which states that this edition was first printed 1886. A line at the start of the book reads, "It makes all the difference in the world whether we put Truth in the first place or in the second place." The note says the writer has availed himself of the opportunity of a new edition to add three or four additional illustrations in the footnotes. The note says the present little volume has no pretensions to be anything more than an Essay.
The author writes that what is important is the mind and attitude, not of the ordinary man, but of those who should be extraordinary. The author also writes that the decisive sign of the elevation of a nation's life is to be sought among those who lead or ought to lead. The author remarks that so acute a head as Hume's should have failed to perceive these very plain considerations.
