About this book
Thoughts on African Colonization is a book by William Lloyd Garrison. The contents list gives section headings that say the American Colonization Society is pledged not to oppose the system of slavery, apologises for slavery and slaveholders, and is the enemy of immediate abolition. The text states that to prejudge and condemn an individual, on vague and apocryphal rumors, without listening to his defence or examining evidence, is tyranny.
The text quotes passages saying that emancipation, without removal from the country, is out of the question, and that as long as present feelings and prejudices exist the abolition of slavery cannot be accomplished without the removal of the blacks. The text also quotes a speaker saying that the speaker came to show this community that the people of color of the United States disapprove of the African Colonization plan, and that they do not wish to emigrate to Africa.
