Threatened by Eliot Schrefer is a young adult adventure novel that is excellent in its narrative style. Luc, an orphan who has lost everyone dear to him, embarks on a perilous journey into the wilds of Gabon. His mother’s tales of “mock men”—chimpanzees whose haunting cries echo through the trees—linger in his memory. When a mysterious man named Prof arrives in town, Luc’s life takes an unexpected turn. Instead of anger, Prof offers him a job: to study the elusive chimpanzees deep within the dangerous jungle. As Luc becomes part of this new family, he must navigate danger, self-sufficiency, and the bonds forged amidst the wilderness.
