About this book
A rain-soaked hat is the last thing Sam Selwyn wants his wife to find when she returns home. After a night out, he calls on Fred Bellamy to help contain the trouble, while the household servant Dibbs listens closely and turns his employer's embarrassment to his own advantage. Arthur Shirley's three-act farce builds its comedy from nervous explanations, awkward errands and objects that refuse to stay out of sight.
Adapted from Hennequin's Les Trois Chapeaux, the play supplies a cast list, costumes, stage properties and detailed directions alongside its dialogue. Fred's secret marriage to Lottie adds another complication to a household already busy with suspicions. His search for a man called Tompkins becomes an exhausting round of mistaken leads. Readers interested in stage comedy can follow how a drawing room becomes a place of mounting confusion.
