About this book
Three Short Works by Gustave Flaubert collects The Dance of Death, The Legend of Saint-Julian the Hospitaller and A Simple Soul. The Dance of Death carries the year 1838, and a bracketed note says the work may be called a prose poem impregnated with the spirit of romanticism.
A section headed DEATH SPEAKS describes winter nights, when the snow-flakes fall slowly from heaven like great white tears and a voice is raised. In one scene Julian stretches himself out upon the leper, lips to lips, chest to chest, and the leper clasps him close. A passage says that Paul brought his bride to visit his mother, and that Madame Aubain felt relieved when she left.
