About this book

Tea leaves, cotton fields and garden plants give Robert Fortune's account of China its practical focus. Appointed botanical collector to the Horticultural Society of London, he arrived in 1843 and describes his travels in this 1847 book. The chapters move through Hong-kong, Chusan, Ning-po and Shanghae, combining observations of harbours and towns with accounts of crops, nurseries, weather and the work of collecting plants.

His treatment of tea follows the harvest from young spring buds to later gatherings, then into cottages and sheds where leaves are prepared. Family groups picking on hillsides, baskets of split bamboo and the need to preserve the leaves' aroma make the process concrete. Alongside these details are sections on rice cultivation, mulberries and silk production.
