About this book
Clements R. Markham's Travels in Peru and India was printed at London in 1862. The title page describes the journeys as made while superintending the collection of chinchona plants and seeds in South America and their introduction into India, and names the author's earlier book Cuzco and Lima. The volume has maps and illustrations, with a frontispiece of chinchona plants at Ootacamund.
One passage describes the village communities of the Deccan near Poona: land of 3669 acres, 107 houses of sun-dried bricks, a town-hall and three temples. Another recounts how the encomiendas, estates granted to Spanish conquerors in Peru, were reformed by the New Laws of 1542 after Las Casas and other friends of the native people won over Charles V, so that they passed to the Crown on the holders' death. Pages near the close describe a place with a view of the Madura plains, with houses used by officials and missionaries.
