Ti-Ping Tien-Kwoh presents a history of the Ti-Ping Revolution that includes a narrative of the author's personal adventures. The narrator recalls arriving during the Chinese New Year holidays, described as a time of extensive merry-making throughout China. The narrator describes festivities at Hong-Kong, where fire-crackers, petards and gongs continue through the night and make sleep difficult.
The narrator reports visiting numerous theatres and finding instrumental and vocal performers whose persistence receives particular notice. A quoted account of public notices on walls lists food, clothes, medicines, taxes, property, etiquette and directions to attend designated quarters for vaccination. A document mentioned in that quoted account announces the names of candidates who had won honours at a recent literary examination in the Heavenly capital.
