About this book
An urgent telegram interrupts Powell Millington's leave in the Indian hills and sends him towards Tibet with the Sikkim-Tibet Mission Force. His account follows the column towards Lhassa, turning from domestic comedy to the practical demands of marching, feeding men and managing a camp. In his preface, he describes his position as that of an ordinary participant among scientists, officials and correspondents.
The details are often small and physical: grain supplies run short, a store of tsampa becomes welcome, and collecting firewood from demolished buildings leaves clothes and faces covered in dust. Even a hot bath requires space, fuel, preparation and a fortunate gap in military duties. Alongside these inconveniences come meetings with Tibetan envoys and observations of their ceremonial arrivals. The result offers readers military travel writing through the everyday routines and dry humour of a British participant.
