About this book
To Mars via the Moon is an astronomical story by Mark Wicks, published in London in 1911 with illustrations. The title page carries a line from Sir Edwin Arnold saying that astronomy will be the chief educator and emancipator of the human race. One illustration is captioned View from the Air-ship, over the Canals and the City of Sirapion.
In one passage the narrator goes over the vessel: the shell is double, the doors open into small lobbies so that every part can be kept air-tight, periscopes serve every compartment, and the machinery is electric or magnetic. M'Allister then swings open the great doors and the vessel glides out on a trolley. In another passage a Martian explains that his people can tell what is in each other's mind without speaking, and says this never spoils conversation.
