About this book

The Ambassador is by Sam Merwin, and its opening blurb says that all Earth needed was a good stiff dose of common sense, but its rulers preferred to depend on the highly fallible computers instead. Zalen Lindsay stands on the rostrum in the huge new United Worlds auditorium on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain and looks out at an ocean of eye-glasses.

Du Fresne, the North American Minister of Computation, tells Lindsay that this is strictly unofficial and that Lindsay is following trend X. Lindsay asks, "Got me all nicely plotted out on your machine?" and Du Fresne answers, "Don't laugh at Elsac, Lindsay," saying it has never been wrong. A speech asks a "simple question without involved mathematical qualifications", one that no computer and no man has thus far been able to answer correctly. The same speech says that failure of computers to give a logical answer has done much to make the people of the speaker's planet feel that no computer is trustworthy to make decisions involving human beings.
