About this book

A new suit and a first shave give Torchy a grown-up air, but Verona's aunt still measures him by his job as an office boy. At the Corrugated Trust in New York, he answers buzzers, watches the bosses and narrates his experiences in brisk, slang-filled English. His friendly employer, Mr. Robert Ellins, offers encouragement, while Torchy tries to arrange a visit with Verona after her return from Bermuda.

Sewell Ford's humorous novel draws its comedy from conversations, social ambitions and the gap between polished manners and sharp replies. An encounter between the violinist Blair Hiscock and the teasing hunter Hamilton Nutt shows Torchy observing other people's disputes as closely as his own. Readers interested in office life and social comedy can follow a narrator whose jokes turn routine calls, introductions and invitations into lively scenes.
