About this book
Town Life in Australia is by Richard Ernest Nowell Twopeny. The introduction says the work was originally written as a series of letters, but the epistolary form has only been partially retained. The contents list, among others, houses, furniture, servants, food, dress, young Australia, social relations, religion and morals, education, politics, business, shops, amusements and newspapers.
The text says the public buildings of Melbourne do the greatest credit to the public spirit of the colonists. Drinking bars are called invariable and very disagreeable accompaniments of every theatre, as the visitor will notice. Young Australia is said to make a specialty of swearing. A tally of headings gives Auction Sales as 128, taking up 12 columns, and Amusements as 24, taking up 2 columns.
