Trees and Other Poems
Trees and Other Poems is the 1914 verse collection by Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918), the American poet, journalist, and Roman Catholic convert whose short title poem Trees is one of the most widely known and most often parodied lyrics in twentieth-century American verse. Kilmer wrote for the New York Times Magazine and converted to Catholicism in 1913. The collection gathers the title poem, the Catholic devotional pieces, and the lyrics on domestic and family subjects that secured Kilmer’s popular reputation in the years just before the First World War. Kilmer enlisted in 1917, served as a sergeant in the 165th Infantry Regiment of the 42nd Rainbow Division, and was killed by a sniper at the Second Battle of the Marne in July 1918 at age thirty-one.
