About this book
Troublous Times in Canada is a history of the Fenian raids of 1866 and 1870, credited to John A. MacDonald. The contents list, among others, names a Fenian Convention at Cincinnati and the Birth of the Irish Republic. A passage said to have embodied Gen. Sweeny's whole strategic programme states that expeditions for the invasion of Canada will rendezvous at Detroit and Rochester, and at Ogdensburg and Plattsburg, and at Portland.
Under the heading The Forces at the Disposal of the Fenians, the quoted text says the Irish Republic calculates to have, by the first of April, fifteen millions of dollars at its disposal in ready cash. A passage says that on the 11th of June last a note was addressed by this department to the Honorable Sir Frederick W. A. Bruce, Her Majesty's Minister Plenipotentiary residing in the United States. A speaker says he saw the Fenians advancing down the road, pushing forward their skirmishers and advancing, as he thought, in a heavy column of companies, and that an order to retire was received.
