About this book

Sara Ware Bassett's The Story of Silk, illustrated by Hattie Longstreet, is dedicated to the boys and girls of Auburndale, Massachusetts. Its contents list fifteen chapters, with titles such as The Bretton Family, The Silk House, The Silkworms, The Silk Harvest and The Awakening of the Chrysalis.

The text explains how silk is made. It compares the leaves of the white, red and black mulberry and says that the father of Marie and Pierre had many lessons to learn before he could raise mulberry trees successfully, to say nothing of silkworms. In a conversation between Pierre and Henri, Henri explains how cocoons are sorted and reeled, why the water must be pure, and how tanks are kept at graduated temperatures. A passage on dyeing says that salts of tin leave silk crisp and harsh.
