About this book
As a boy in Inverness, John G. Gollan follows recruiting parties through the streets and imagines army life as a path to honour. His account traces that enthusiasm to enlistment with the 79th Cameron Highlanders at Edinburgh Castle, then to training at Chobham and the regiment's departure for Turkey in 1854. The distance between a recruit's expectations and a serving soldier's experience gives this memoir its focus.
Gollan writes as a former corporal whose health has suffered through active service. He describes danger, fatigue and the loss of comrades, while his preface explains his wish to help the public understand a soldier's hardships. The book also includes verses written in reflective moments. Its direct personal voice offers readers an individual perspective on the Crimean campaign and military life, with colonial prejudices evident in the language of the later fighting.
