About this book
At nineteen, Allen Ripley Foote rushed to enlist after Lincoln's 1861 call for volunteers. In this personal account, presented to fellow veterans in Cincinnati in 1913, he recalls the early experiences of a Michigan infantryman: the welcome along the railway, the confusion of inexperienced troops, and the retreat from Bull Run. Small incidents carry much of the story, including a recruiting doctor's advice about his height and a soldier's startled reaction to distant enemy guns.
Foote also describes Lincoln visiting the troops, General Kearny leading men forward at Williamsburg, and his own fear while waiting for action at Fair Oaks. His recollections combine dry humor with a strong sense of duty and the physical cost of service. Readers interested in Civil War memoirs will find a soldier's perspective on how patriotic enthusiasm met the uncertainty and danger of the field.
