Ships are going down in 1866 and nobody can say what is doing it. Professor Aronnax joins the hunt, and the sea monster turns out to be a machine: the Nautilus, run by a captain who has severed every tie to every country on land and answers only to Nemo.
What Verne cared about is all on the page. The diving apparatus, the electric lighting, the coral burial ground, the passage beneath the Antarctic ice. Nemo’s history he withholds almost entirely, which is part of why other writers kept rebuilding the character for the next hundred years.
About the Author
