About this book

The volume is titled A Winter Amid the Ice, and Other Thrilling Stories, by Jules Verne, with sixty illustrations. The contents list includes Doctor Ox’s Experiment, whose first chapter tells how it is useless to seek, even on the best maps, for the small town of Quiquendone. The text says, “It required two persons to eat a strawberry, and four to consume a pear.”

A character named Aupic replies that if they escape, “we shall owe a fine candle to Our Lady of the Ice!” A brig passes through a narrow strait, where an enormous block of ice comes rapidly down upon her. A burgomaster replies to Doctor Ox that the streets are wanted lighted within a month, or a large indemnity must be paid for each day of delay.
