About this book

Roadside shrines give D. H. Lawrence a way to read the mountain country between Germany and northern Italy. In these travel essays, published in 1916, he follows the old imperial route through the Tyrol and considers how carved religious figures express local life. His descriptions move between snowy heights, darkening roads and a farming family gathering hay in the rain. Physical work and the surrounding landscape become starting points for reflections on belief and human experience.

The portraits of Paolo and Maria Fiori bring that attention to a household. Lawrence contrasts Paolo's quiet, settled bearing with Maria's practical intelligence and experience of service in Venice and Verona. Their marriage becomes another occasion for interpreting temperament through bodily appearance and daily life.
