About this book
Ulysses S. Grant is by Walter Allen. The contents list names, among others, His Ancestry, The Period of Youth, Shiloh, Corinth, Iuka, Vicksburg and The Tour of the World. The first chapter is titled Our National Military Hero.
The text says the Grant clan has been distinguished for centuries on account of its sturdy indomitable traits and its prowess in war. The text gives the mottos Stand Fast, Craig Ellarchie!, Stand Fast and Stand Sure. Of the route for supplies, the text says it was circuitous, inadequate, and insecure, over mountain roads that had become horrible, and says the soldiers were on half rations. The text says that Grant was no longer President Grant, but again General Grant, and that with all his honors about him he stood on the common level of citizenship, as when he was a farmer in Missouri or a tanner's clerk in Galena.
