About this book

Samuel Butler, known for Erewhon and The Way of All Flesh, here presses a theory of heredity in which inherited habit works as memory carried across generations. The chapters tell how he came to write Life and Habit and Evolution, Old and New, and how Darwin responded to the second. They also give a translation of Ewald Hering's lecture On Memory and of a chapter on instinct from Von Hartmann's Philosophy of the Unconscious. This 1910 edition was reset with an introduction by the zoologist Marcus Hartog.
