About this book

Alps and Sanctuaries of Piedmont and the Canton Ticino is a book by Samuel Butler. A new and enlarged edition carries the author’s revisions and an index, and its introduction calls the book undeservedly neglected.

The text says the main point that will be admitted is that the average Englishman is more attracted by Handel and Shakespeare than by any other two men who have been long enough dead. The writer says the countries dearest to these two master spirits are those which are also dearest to the writer, naming England and Italy. A quoted defence of an image says its authenticity is so certainly and clearly established that all supposition to the contrary becomes inexplicable and absurd. The index lists entries including Diatonic scale, and song of birds in New Zealand, and Distribution of plants and animals often inexplicable.
