About this book

Under the Maples is a collection of essays by John Burroughs. According to its preface, most of them were written in a hay-barn study in the Catskills and under the maples at Riverby, during the last two years of the author's life, and his thoughts turned to his Hudson River home while he wintered in Southern California in 1921.

One passage looks at a great tree as a fountain, with a stream of water flowing up through it from the rootlets to the leaves. Another sets coal and oil against the winds, the streams and the sunshine, and describes the western end of Pennsylvania as one vast coal-mine. A third speaks of Nature's care over fertilization, as in certain orchids, and of fear and pain as two things she is not sparing of.
