About this book
Illness brings Ted back from a civil service appointment in India, and a visit to his twin brother Val grows into a settled life in Scotland. Val serves as a priest in Ardmuirland, a rural community above the sea, where their stone cottage connects to a modest chapel. Michael Barrett presents village stories through Ted's recollections, beginning with the brothers' affection, their years apart and the household they now share.
Penny, who once cared for the twins as their nurse, manages the house with energy and a special devotion to Val. Beyond these domestic scenes, the mountain landscape brings sharper trials. A man struggling through deep snow takes heart from a distant light and a dog's bark, while another passage describes a warm room, a peat fire and a family reading the local paper. Scottish speech, parish life and the contrast between shelter and exposed hills give these stories their particular setting and appeal.
