Victory Odes

Pindar was the most celebrated lyric poet of ancient Greece, and these victory odes were commissioned to honor the winners of the great athletic games at Olympia, Delphi, Nemea, and the Isthmus. Far more than sports reporting, each ode weaves a champion’s triumph together with the myths of his city, the favor of the gods, and grave reflections on human glory and its limits. The verse is dense, soaring, and famously difficult, moving without warning from the racecourse to the halls of heroes. Composed in the fifth century BCE and gathered here in Arthur S.
