About this book
Richard Brooke, F.S.A., wrote this book about fifteenth-century England, published in London in 1857. In his preface he describes the century as a time of internal discord and conflict between rival factions, and the title promises visits to fields of battle from that period. The title page adds that some miscellaneous tracts and papers on archaeological subjects are included.
The text is full of local detail. One passage describes the east window of a church, with its stained glass, a monogram of the name Maria and part of an inscription beginning "Orate pro animabus Rogeri." Another discusses the Brereton family and cites Ormerod's History of Cheshire. In another passage Brooke mentions a tablet put up in 1856 near Bow Bridge about the burial place of Richard III, and says there does not appear to be any authority for it.
