About this book
Edge Hill is subtitled The Battle and Battlefield, with notes on Banbury and thereabout, and is by Edwin Alfred Walford. The preface to the 1904 edition says the letters of Captain Nathaniel Fiennes and Captain Kightley, now added, may serve to make the tale a more living one. The preface refers to plans of battle similar to two of those of the author's book of 1886.
The Tower or Round House is described as an octagonal tower erected with artificial ruins in 1750 to mark the spot where the King's Standard was displayed before the Royalist army descended into the plain to give battle. The farms Battledon and Thistledon are noted from the fact of so much of the fight having revolved round them. Kineton lies about four miles directly to the North, beyond which Warwick Castle may sometimes be descried. A report in the text says its writers took my Lord of Lindsey, Generall of the Foote, who had been shot in the thigh and died the Tuesday morning following.
