About this book
The text is taken from Good Housekeeping, July 1947, under the line "Sometimes a family may be a happier family if part of it moves away." Ann sits by the fireplace matching a button to her husband Peter's shirt while her mother, Mrs. Reed, is staying in the house. Ann's father has died, and Mrs. Reed had not liked her daughter's marriage to Peter.
Ann's children, Ben and Wilfreda, are in the room with an Irish terrier named Taffy. In one passage Mrs. Reed gathers her wools, says her head aches and leaves the room, and Peter and the children turn to old songs, Three Blind Mice among them. In another scene Peter lies on a couch in the study with a large bandage around his right hand, and Ben sits holding his father's ankle.
