About this book

Astronomers in 2070 cannot account for a small world that changes course as it approaches the inner planets. Gregg Haljan, a former spaceship navigating officer, explains the danger to Anita Prince and their friend Venza in Greater New York. When Snap Dean arrives with a secret summons, a makeshift detector reveals that someone is listening to their conversation. A puzzle in the sky has become an immediate threat inside an ordinary room.

Ray Cummings builds this science fiction adventure around communication devices, inhabited planets and the unsettling possibilities of controlled gravity. Gregg tells the story himself, moving from news reports and private suspicions to encounters with Wandl's strange inhabitants. Alien bodies challenge Gregg's powers of description, while unfamiliar gravity makes even walking difficult. Readers interested in older visions of space travel will find a future of planetary passenger routes, monorails and surveillance, where technical ingenuity matters as much as courage.
