About this book

Trigger Argee is around twenty-four, with silver-white hair and a small sporting handgun she handles like an expert. A former star pupil of the Colonial School on the university world of Maccadon, she is now secretary and assistant to Precolonial Commissioner Holati Tate, and the novel opens just after a kidnapping raid has shaken the campus.

Tate has made a find that may be the greatest scientific event of the century: Old Galactic plasmoids, strange living objects left by an older civilization, now the subject of a research project. Trigger is sent to help, and she soon learns that grabbers, the professional kidnappers of this future Hub, may care about more than students. Later she is put to sleep and carried off to the planet Manon.

James H. Schmitz wrote fast, plot-driven space adventure with a capable young woman at its center, and this novel dates from 1962. Readers of classic science fiction will find chases, schemes and a puzzle about the plasmoids that keeps tightening.
