About this book

David Nott describes volunteering as a surgeon in conflict zones, where urgent medical needs collide with scarce equipment and danger to staff. His memoir reflects on the skills required when ordinary hospital resources are unavailable. Alongside accounts of his work, he examines the motives that draw him back and the need to offer patients reassurance as well as treatment.
