David Nott
1956
Nott is a consultant surgeon in London who has taken unpaid leave nearly every year since 1993 to operate in war zones: Sarajevo, Afghanistan, Darfur, Libya, Gaza, and repeatedly in Aleppo, where he worked in hospitals that were being deliberately bombed. War Doctor describes the surgery and also what it does to a person to come home and be asked about the traffic. He once amputated a boy's shoulder by following text-message instructions from a colleague, having never performed that operation. He runs a foundation training surgeons for conflict areas, and has spoken about the post-traumatic stress that followed.
