About this book

J. Stephen Jeans wrote this 1890 book on waterways, and its title page promises a description of the Panama, Suez, Manchester, Nicaraguan and other canals. The introduction says it would be difficult to name a subject of more importance to a country's material interests than adequate means of transport, and an illustration shows a cutting on the Birmingham Canal.

One passage gives figures for the Baltic Ship Canal, from Holtenau near Kiel to the Elbe near Brunsbütte: a length of 75 to 80 kilometres, 60 metres wide at the surface, 8 and a half metres deep, with an estimated cost of 156 million marks. Another list sets out proposals for English canals, including a link between Birmingham and the Trent and the improvement of the Wiltshire and Berkshire canal, and goes on to the Forth and Clyde Canal.
