J. Stephen Jeans combined Scottish journalist and author whose writing focused strongly on industry, civic life, and prominent figures in western Scotland. He edited the Glasgow Evening Star, and essays first prepared for newspaper readers supplied the foundation for Western Worthies. Published in Glasgow in 1872, the book gathers biographical and critical sketches of regional figures associated with engineering, commerce, science, public service, and intellectual life. Jeans explains that many subjects reviewed their own sketches, a practice intended to strengthen factual accuracy while keeping the portraits accessible. The volume includes James Lumsden, James Hedderwick, Walter Crum, James Young, Thomas Graham, and other influential Scots. Western Worthies is consequently both a collective biography and a record of the networks shaping Victorian Glasgow. Jeans later wrote works on iron and steel, railways, and industrial development, extending the practical interests visible in these profiles. His emphasis falls on careers, institutions, and public contribution rather than private anecdote, giving the collection the character of civic history.
